Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ I'll Remember You by Sophie Zelmani

Episode 7 of Season One - called "Angel" - revolves around the growing love between Buffy and Angelus and they have their first kiss! But then Angel turns into a Vamp and has to jump out the window. Truly a classic Beauty and the Beast moment.



Later Buffy thinks that Angel has bitten her mother, Joyce, when really he was saving her from the evil Darla, his sire, who has been helping The Master. This leads to a dilemma as Buffy vacilates between loving Angel and wanting to stake him. In the end, he explains that the Romany Gypsies have cursed him with a soul and while he wants to continue biting people and drinking their blood, he is so full of remorse that he never does.



The song "I'll remember you" by Sophie Zelmani, plays at the Bronze as Buffy and Angel say goodbye - but of course this is only the beginning of their long complicated relationship.

Best Quotes From "Pangs" - A Buffy Thanksgiving

"Pangs" is one of my favorite episodes. The writers and actors had a great time exploring all the various pros and cons of celebrating Thanksgiving Day, and we get to see Buffy showing that she can also Slay the Culinary Arts in the kitchen. Angel makes a cameo, unbeknownst to Buffy, and Spike has to be tied to a chair in order to behave, but gets to eat some gravy as a reward. Xander contracts syphilis as Native American revenge, but then finds a cure. There's a LOT to be thankful for!

Spike peers through a dusty window into a dilapidated building. Inside, in a pool of golden lamp-light, a small nest of vampires is settling down with a dazed human victim. An older vampire is about to bite. Then he pauses and holds the whimpering victim out to a younger vampire. A heart-warming domestic scene. Spike watches, his breath frosting the window, a picture of misery and longing.

RILEY (Talking about his home in Iowa) ... After dinner, we all go for a walk down by the river with the dogs. And there's... trees, and I know what you're thinking, it's like I grew up in a Grant Wood painting.
BUFFY Exactly. If I knew who that was.
RILEY Just a guy who painted stuff that looked like what I grew up in.
BUFFY: Ah. Well, have fun at the homestead.
RILEY: Always do. What's the line -- "Home's the place that, when you have to go there --"

Buffy slams a palm to his chest, sends him flying back on his ass. He scrambles out of the direct sunlight, his blanket beginning to smoke.
SPIKE: What part of "help me" did you not understand?
BUFFY: The part where I help you.
SPIKE: Come on! I'm parboiling out here!

SPIKE: I'm saying Spike had a little trip to the vet and now he doesn't chase the other puppies anymore. I can't bite anything. I can't even hit people.

Spike is being tied to a chair. Buffy finishes the last knot as he complains:
SPIKE: Bloody hell, woman! You're cutting off my circulation.
BUFFY: You don't have any circulation.
SPIKE: Well it pinches.

SPIKE: Oh, someone put a stake in me!
XANDER: You got a lot of volunteers in here...

Buffy Saves CBS from Time-Warner Cable

What better way for Buffy star Sarah Michelle Geller to return to television than to immediately kick some ass of the corporate kind?

Time Warner Cable was refusing to pay CBS for broadcasting in major markets such as New York and Dallas, but pressure from both football fans and especially Buffy fans anticipating a new Geller series, "The Crazy Ones," they backed down.

The month-long staring contest between CBS (CBS) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) is over, now that Time Warner has blinked first. The cable giant agreed to pay significantly more than its prior rate for the right to beam CBS signals in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas, though not quite as big an increase as the network was seeking. It’s “hard to believe this isn’t a CBS victory,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst with BTIG in New York, said in an e-mail to Bloomberg.
. . . With CBS airing its first pro football games of the season on Sunday, including Chicago’s beloved Bears, Time Warner Cable was in store for some serious ire if it didn’t get the network back on its platform.
CBS, however, had an additional programming ace up its sleeve in recent negotiations: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. More precisely, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who stars in The Crazy Ones, a CBS comedy about an ad agency that will premiere on Sept. 26.
In large part because of the seven years she spent hunting the undead, Gellar still carries a cultish fan-base, according to Networked Insights, a New York-based data-analysis shop that helps such big companies as General Electric (GE) deploy advertising dollars. Buffy vanished from the airwaves in 2003, yet Gellar still sparks more conversations on social-media platforms than any of CBS’s actors. That’s a group that includes Robin Williams, who headlines Gellar’s new show, Will Arnett, Carrie-Anne Moss, and all kinds of other top-flight talent that wasn’t in Scooby-Doo 2 or I Know What You Did Last Summer, as Gellar was.

What kind of name is 'Buffy' Anyway?

In the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Welcome to the Hellmouth," we have this snippet of dialogue:

Girl #1: The new kid? She seems kind of weird to me. What kind of name is Buffy?

Girl #2: [walking by] Hey, Aphrodesia.

Aphrodisia: Oh, Hey!

LOL - clearly Buffy doesn't have the strangest name at Sunnydale.

But it does beg the question about the origins of Buffy's name. Now the obvious symbolism is that she is a really strong girl with muscles - she's buff. But what else?

On her tombstone in season five her name is "Buffy Anne Summers."

Slayer Sountrack Sunday ~ "The Sun Keeps Shining" By Fonda

Fonda appeared in the Buffy episode "All the Way" from Season 6. The title is an obvious reference to teen sexual activity, and Dawn thinks she is ready for that . . . until her date turns out to be a vampire! And Dawn gets her first kiss on Halloween, which seems totally appropriate for a rather supernatural girl.

Also in this episode, Tara is getting fed up with Willow's magicks, and Xander announces his engagement to Anya while wearing a pirate costume and eye-patch - foreshadowing his "accident" in Season 7.

Although the action takes place on Halloween night, this is actually a breezy summer song.

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ Buffy and Angel Love Themes

There are two different Buffy and Angel "Love" Themes, both by Christophe Beck and both quite beautiful: "Close Your Eyes" and "Moment of Happiness."

The composer's biography from his website:

Canadian composer Christophe Beck started piano lessons at five, and by eleven he was learning Bee Gees songs by ear and performing with his first-ever band, the unfortunately-named Chris and The Cupcakes. During high school he studied piano, saxophone, and drums, and wrote many tender 80's love ballads.

While studying music at Yale, Beck wrote two musicals with his brother Jason (a.k.a. Gonzales, the Paris-based pianist-producer-TV Host-prankster), as well as an opera based on "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe.

Upon graduation, Beck moved to Los Angeles to attend USC's prestigious film scoring program, where he studied with Jerry Goldsmith. A personal recommendation from the legendary Buddy Baker, head of the USC Music Department, led to his first assignment for a Canadian TV series called "White Fang." Several TV series later, he was asked to score the second season of WB Network's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Close Your Eyes plays in the Season Two Episode "Becoming." It is included on Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Album (1999 Television Series)

The meaning of the title comes from the tragic fact that Angel can't be happy with Buffy because as soon as they find perfect happiness together, he loses his soul and she has to kill him. We see the flashback in "Becoming Pt. 1" just before the vampire Darla kills Liam in order to turn him to Angelus, she tells him to "Close your eyes." In "Becoming Pt. 2", just before Buffy kills Angel, she too says, "Close your eyes."


The "Moment of Happiness" version appears in "Innocence" and is included on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Score

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ Laika's "Black Cat Bone"

"Laika" is the name of the first dog the Russians put into orbit around the earth, but ironically the band with that name may be best known for a song "Black Cat Bone" which is played in Season six, the episode called "Wrecked."

Willow is going through a crisis due to magic, with the analogy to drug addiction - the meaning of the title. She follows her old pal Amy the ex-rat (Elizabeth Anne Allen) to a private "magicks den" where she trades some of her power to a sort of guru/junkie called "Rack" (Jeff Kober) for a psychedelic mystical experience.

The song "Black Cat Bone" by Laika plays during Willow's mind-trip, and captures the sinister illogic of it.

We know her experience isn't entirely pleasant because Willow has to take a shower afterwards to "sober up."


But Willow hasn't had enough, so she returns to Rack's house - rhymes with crackhouse - dragging along Buffy's teenage sister Dawn, who is creeped out but who can't leave. When Willow realizes she has accidentally conjured a demon during her bad trip, they have to steal a car to get away, ending in an accident which injures Dawn.

Buffy is ticked-off to say the least. But Willow is forgiven because Buffy isn't acting responsibly either, finally consumating her flirtation with Spike during which they literally "bring the house down" on themselves - another meaning of the title "Wrecked." At the end of the show, a contrite and sober Willow is alone and so is Buffy, surrounded by cloves of garlic to keep out the amorous Spike.

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ The Triangle

"The Triangle" is an episode from Season 5 in which a Troll who was once involved with Anya appears to wreak havoc on Sunnydale. The title of the episode applies not just to Xander-Anya and the Troll, but to Buffy mourning the absence of Riley while Spike is falling in love with her.

The Troll is mostly a humorous charactor, but the giant Troll Hammer which he leaves behind plays an important part later when Buffy fights the goddess Glory at the end of Season 5.

There are two songs played in this episode.

The first is "There's no Other Way" by Blur which plays at the Bronze. The song is included on the album Independent Stuff (CD Compilation, 20 Tracks, Various, Diverse Artists)




The second is The Dandy Warhols "Bohemian Like You" from their album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia.

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ Rasputina

Rasputina is an American band influenced by the Victorian Era and the Steampunk movement.

The Rasputina group has existed for more than 20(0) years. Melora Creager founded it to meet like-minded young women (excellent cellists that wanted to play rock music and wear historical costumery). Although often mistakenly lumped into passing fancies, Rasputina manages to survive and defy categorization by maintaining a child-like delight in music-making alongside a clear & true integrity.

The song "Transylvanian Concubine" is included on their album Thanks For The Ether. It was also included on Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Album (1999 Television Series)


The song plays in Episode 13 of Season 2 - "Surprise" - in which Buffy is having a rather dark 17th birthday haunted by bad dreams about the vampire Drusilla killing Angel. Meanwhile, in an ironic parallel, Drusilla and Spike are planning a party with "presents" arriving in the form of body parts from which they hope to construct an invincible demon to defeat the Slayer.

Transylvanian Concubine is really the perfect song for Drusilla and plays toward the end of the episode when she demands "more music" and unveils the demon.

In another ironic twist, it is Buffy who becomes the vampire's "concubine" when Angel gives her an Irish Claddagh ring to seal their love, and she sleeps with him. The moment of bliss created with Buffy lifts the gypsy curse from Angel, who suddenly loses his soul and goes back to being an ordinary evil vampire whom Buffy eventually has to kill in a following episode. So . . . happy birthday, Buffy! Not!






And alternate version of the song called "Manson Mix" (as in Marilyn Manson) is below. I prefer the original.

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday - Sarah McLachlan

Popular artist Sarah McLachlan provided two songs to the Buffy series, and both seem appropriate for Easter Sunday.

"Full of Grace" is about being strong in difficult situations, and was played in "Becoming, Part Two," in Season Two when Buffy has kill her lover Angel in order to save the world. The song plays as Buffy leaves town. The song is found on McLachlan's 1997 album Surfacing






"Prayer of St. Francis" is from Season 6, "The Grave." It's included on Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Radio Sunnydale



This song seems even more significant now, since the new Pope just took the name of St. Francis of Assisi who wrote the prayer.

Three big things happen while this song is playing at the end of the show. Xander is able to stop Willow from destroying the world, Buffy and Dawn emerge from graveyard hole - appearing resurrected into a scene that looks like the Garden of Eden, and Spike the Vampire painfully gets his soul back, which Buffy doesn't find out about until Season 7, "Beneath You" when Spike explains it in the church and throws himself of the cross. While smoke rises around him from the cross, he isn't destroyed like other vampires because his soul protects him.

Buffy comments to Giles that she feels that when she crawled out of her grave, she left part of herself behind. At the end of this episode, she must once again crawl out of a grave, this time with Dawn. The first time, she was disoriented, it was night, and Sunnydale had been overrun by demons. This time, it is morning and she is with Dawn, and they look out over a beautiful forest. It is a chance for her to start over, and really live for the first time since she was brought back to life at the beginning of the season - thus completing the circle begun with her resurrection the previous fall.

As Buffy and Dawn emerge from the grave-like hole in the ground, Sarah MacLachlan chimes in, singing the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi ("make me an instrument of your peace..."). It seems, largely, that everyone is where they are supposed to be. Buffy is back on good terms with Dawn (the best part of herself, as she described her last year). Xander is consoling Willow, who is most likely finally allowing herself to grieve for Tara, not to mention regretting her actions. Anya is helping Giles out of the ruins of the Magic Box. Jonathan and Andrew are nervously sharing a ride with a too-friendly trucker. As the song reaches it's conclusion, Buffy and Dawn walk in a graveyard far more scenic (and Garden of Eden-like) than we have seen before.
"And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.", the song concludes, as we see a badly beaten Spike lying in the cave. The demon informs him that he has endured the trials. Spike demands what he wants - "make me what I was - so Buffy can get what she deserves". The demon agrees, grasping his chest - "we will return your soul".
