In-Depth Interview with James Marsters (Spike)

 photo spike-cross.gif

A.V. Club has a wonderful in-depth interview with James Marsters talking about his Buffy days with great thoughts on fandom and his days filming the show.

Here he talks about his favorite episodes which are also fan favorites: "The Body," "Tabula Rasa," and "Beneath You." I especially enjoyed this insight into "Beneath You," the scene of Spike on the cross in the church and how hard it was to get the right amount of "shame" into that scene because Spike had earned back his soul:

What is your personal favorite—and least favorite—Buffy episode?

JM: Oh, I’ve got so many favorites. One of them is “The Body,” because: Wow. So different than other episodes. Really proving that the show can be just a very serious drama occasionally. And I had a week off, which, when you’re doing 12 to 20 hours of 22 episodes—I’m not joking—having the week off is life-saving. “Tabula Rasa.” That’s just an awesome show. Loved that one. I have very fond memories of the first one I was in. That was just such an intense experience. I think the director committed career suicide. He got so excited by what was happening in the episode, and birthing this character with me, that he started adding shots. And he was blowing budget, and Gareth Davies came down and told him, “If you don’t rein it in, you are never coming back on this show.” And he came to me and he said, “Look, they just told me I’m never going to be on this show if I don’t rein it in. I’m not reining it in. I don’t care. This episode is going to be amazing. And I’m going to get so much work off it in other places. But I’m going to make this really cool.” And he really did. I think part of the reason the character broke out quickly is because that first episode was so tight, as far as how many shots he got.

Buffy Turns 18 ~ Tribute in The Atlantic

 photo tumblr_lhgweyKR121qb8jj3o1_500.gif

The Atlantic has a great tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the show turns 18 years old.

From The Atlantic
Buffy is ... unique in that, as much as Sunnydale is a Hellmouth, high school is hell. The monsters in the first season are literal manifestations of the demons that plague teenagers—a controlling mother who's so intent on living through her daughter that she switches bodies with her, a pack of teenage boys who become uncontrollably feral, an Internet boyfriend who pretends to be a normal kid but whose real identity is much more complex (in this case, he's a demon called Moloch who got accidentally uploaded onto the Internet). In the episode “Out of Mind, Out of Sight,” one of Buffy’s classmates is ignored to the extent that she physically becomes invisible. In transmogrifying common teenage issues into actual, tangible villains, Buffy makes them seem important, and worth agonizing over. It also makes them seem conquerable.

. . . Television has had lots of complex, admirable teenage heroines since Buffy, but it's hard to think of one so consistently empowered to take control of the circumstances around her, whether in the middle of a graveyard, surrounded by vampires, or in her bedroom, grounded. Buffy’s super-strength is a physical attribute endowed by the forces of destiny, but it's also a state of confidence and competence that carries her through the varying traumas of having the fate of the world always on her shoulders.

Drusilla's Dolls

 photo georges-drusilla.jpg

One of the creepiest things about the Vampire Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer is that she has arrested development due to being tortured into insanity at an early age. One symbol of her delicate mental state is Drusilla's obsession with dolls, which are at once her playthings and "children" as well as pretend victims, just as she was once the plaything and victim of Angelus/Angel who turned her into a vamp.

Miss Edith is Drusilla's favorite doll, but she has many more, often seen wearing blindfolds or gagged. In some ways the dolls form a kind of family between herself and Spike, who tolerates all of Drusilla's eccentricities.

Strangely there is an antique book from 1921 called "Drusilla's Dolls" by a writer with the colorful name of Belle Bacon Bond.

 photo 411mY5SvC4L.jpg

The book, which is set mostly in Boston, seems to be an inspiration to the writers of Buffy, although I have never read that anywhere and couldn't find any evidence. However, the book does exist and is available on Amazon

You can also read the free online version here. It's old-fashioned and charming in a way, but very simplified. I wouldn't compare it to the classic Rumer Godden dollhouse books or even Raggedy Ann, but it is simpler and more like an old reading book from school.

Book Description on Amazon:
This charming true story of a little girl named Drusilla growing up in the 1860s is a loving tribute to Drusilla's mother-a woman wise enough to honor the sacred spaces of childhood and the holy spirit of her child's originality. An only child, Drusilla made playfellows of her doll collection. Her gentle recounting of their adventures has entranced five generations. Now, the republication of this delightful book makes it available for many generations to come. Originally published in 1921.

From the website Everything Drusilla
Belle Bacon Bond was already a grandmother by the time Drusilla and Her Dolls was published. An autobiography, the charming story chronicles the author's formative childhood years. To the best of my knowledge, no one knows why she happened to call her childhood self "Drusilla." Indeed, her own name was Isabella, not Belle at all. Perhaps she was too modest to use her own name; perhaps "Belle and Her Dolls" just didn't have the proper "ring."
In any case, children love this enchanting tale of a little girl growing up in the 1860s. An only child, Drusilla makes playfellows of her doll collection.
. . . Mrs. Bond's gentle recounting of her childhood adventures with Frank Bowker, Flora Washington, and the rest of her doll family has entranced five generations of mothers and children alike. Now, this republication makes it available for many generations to come.

 photo 03360522-d637-41d7-9acf-b0332406039f.jpg

This is great news - you can watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the new network called Pivot.

From Hollywood Reporter
In a bid to lure its target millennial audience of 18- to 34-year-olds, the fledgling Participant Media network has acquired the rights to series from 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros., respectively. The cult hits will air together as a 10 p.m. weeknight programming block starting Jan. 13.

"Buffy and Veronica Mars are enormously entertaining and celebrated TV shows with significant cultural and social relevance,” said Pivot president Evan Shapiro in a statement, adding: “Both focus on smart, strong, young women dealing with critical issues from class struggles to gender roles – challenges facing a great many of our viewers. Pivot will contextualize the shows, presenting them with exclusive commentary from fans, experts and academics, to both celebrate these two great series and begin a dialogue with our viewers.”

 photo vampire-academy-zoey-deutch1-449x60.jpg

Sarah Michelle Geller tweeted a funny pic of herself in front of a poster for the upcoming movie "Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters" starring Zoey Deutch, wondering if the actress knew how to use the wooden stake she was holding.

Deutch replied in good-natured fashion:

Elisabeth Taylor was a Buffy Watcher

 photo CleopatraTaylorTN.jpg

According to an interview with her great-grandson in People Magazine:
Taylor's great-grandson Finn McMurray remembers cuddling in her big bed, watching everything from her movies, Cleopatra and National Velvet to CSI and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "We'd watch bad TV and eat popcorn," recalls Finn, 15. "She was so much fun."

Bad? Well, Taylor made a few bad movies herself, and wasn't above a bit of kitsch - have you seen Cleopatra?

What did Sarah Michelle Geller think of this news? She's still a fan of Ms. Taylor:

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ Bif Naked

 photo 7c0dbba0-cd80-46cf-b71c-295afbb6d37c.jpg

Bif Naked's name is a play on her name Beth and the phrase "buff naked," which fits right into Buffy the Vampire Slayer canon. She is a Canadian/American singer with a soulful voice and an interesting goth background. Her videos remind me of Pink's later work - clearly an influence!

Via Canadian Expat on Wordpress:
For anyone who doesn’t know Bif she was born in New Delhi, India to two teenage Americans attending a private school there which resulted in her being adopted by missionaries and being brought back to the US. From elementary age on she lived in The Pas, Dauphin, and finally Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has a bit of a gothic look, lots of tattoos and an amazing voice. She’s been called Gwen Stefani’s evil twin which I’m sure she hates because she’s unique in her own right, and well, much more awesome.
Since I heard her last she’s released 2 more albums, acted in various shows and movies, continued to write poetry, and has done motivational speaking.

From Huffington Post
...Bif Naked has made a career out of being a badass chick. Initially, it was by way of the late-'90s CanRock boys club, prowling Edgefest stages, infiltrating rock radio and even performing at the Hellmouth-adjacent all-ages club on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
More recently, the heavily tattooed singer has become known as a badass chick in another venue -- the B.C. Cancer Agency's Vancouver Centre, where she successfully beat breast cancer with a lumpectomy and chemo back in 2008-2009. She now returns regularly, boldly confronting her own fragile mortality to encourage those women still fighting for their lives.

Lucky:

Moment of Weakness:

Bif Naked's songs appear in the fourth season of Buffy, episode 3 "The Harsh Light of Day," all from the album with a great title "I Bificus" - a reference to "I Spartacus," from the Kirk Douglas movie. The three songs are "Lucky," "Moment of Weakness," and "Anything" (which unfortunately has no video I can find). The song "Lucky" is included on "Buffy: The Album."

In this episode, Spike uses the fabled Gem of Amarra ring to make himself invincible to sunlight. Eventually Buffy defeats him and decides to give the ring to Angel in Los Angeles. This is the reverse of what happens at the end of the series, when Buffy rejects Angel and gives the "champion" medallion to Spike, who by that time has proven his love and loyalty, and won back his soul. And of course, in the "harsh light" of that rare gem he fries himself to kill the demons underground and save the world.

 photo inthedark_ring.jpg

This is considered a "cross-over" episode because action continues on the show "Angel," episode "In the Dark," when Spike goes to LA to get the Gem of Amarra back from Angel, torturing him with exposure to light. Nice contrast with the episode titles - "Harsh Light" versus "In the Dark."

The title also refers to disillusionment with relationships, as Buffy wakes up to regrets for sleeping with Parker (see this previous post about "Beer Bad"), and Anya strips down to throw herself at Xander, with unsatisfactory results. Another disillusioned woman is the vampiress Harmony, who realizes that Spike doesn't love her but merely uses her for sex. The point of all three stories is that it's easy to confuse sex with love, and that feelings often aren't mutual.

Sarah Michelle Geller Loves Some HGTV

 photo hgtv.jpg

Who knew? "Crazy Ones" star Sarah Michelle Geller has a favorite show and it has nothing to do with vampires, and everything to do with the home-selling Canadian show "Love it or List it." It's rather hilarious that she expresses such a liking for HGTV, the home-improvement cable channel, since a running joke on Buffy was that the Summers house was constantly being destroyed by demons, to the point that Xander had to learn to be a construction worker so the house could be fixed before the next episode.

The Loop Canada
Spying this reporter’s press badge, Gellar’s eyes opened wide. “Wait, are you TV Guide Canada?” she asked excitedly. “Can we discuss my obsession with Love It or List It?!?”

“It’s like my favourite show!” she continued. “And I love Love It or List It too with the girl from The Bachelorette!”

By Love It or List It Too Gellar was referring to Love It or List It Vancouver, the spinoff series that pairs one-time reality star Jillian Harris with Todd Talbot (picture above). Apparently that’s what the show — which returns to Canada’s W Network on Monday — is called in the States, where it airs on HGTV.

Gellar described herself as an “HGTV addict,” with Canadian import Love It or List It being one of her main fixes. She apparently encourages her friends and co-workers to watch it constantly. She explained, laughing, “I’m like, ‘You have to see what happens! They’re either going to love it or they’re going to list it!’”

. . . “I only know Vancouver. I only know Kitsilano,” she explained, before launching into an impression of her future, house-showing self. “Like, ‘Here’s a really nice house in Kitsilano!’”

Whedon ~ New Teen Vampire Shows are "Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie"

 photo vampire-diaries.jpg

Joss Whedon is frustrated with the latest crop of Vampire tales, and he has good reason to be. From "Twilight" to "Vampire Diaries" there are no characters to match the power of Buffy, Willow, Tara, or Anya. Most girls don't want to slay the vampires - they want to date them!

From Entertainment Weekly Via Wet Paint
"The thing about Buffy for me is–on a show-by-show basis–are there female characters who are being empowered, who are driving the narrative?”

That question mark has him disappointed in relationship-centric vampire dramas that focus on love triangles — which he did with Buffy, Angel, and Spike through the years, but in a different way — and the magazine specifically asked about Twilight and The Vampire Diaries.

“The Twilight thing and a lot of these franchise attempts coming out, everything rests on what this girl will do, but she’s completely passive, or not really knowing what the hell is going on,” he said. “And that’s incredibly frustrating to me because a lot of what’s taking on the oeuvre of Buffy, is actually a reaction against it. Everything is there — except for the Buffy. A lot of things aimed at the younger kids is just Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie.”

Exciting ~ Sarah Michelle Geller Talks Possible Buffy Movie

 photo tumblr_llzqy4x7gJ1qgqkw9o1_500.gif

Wow - you don't get news like this every day! A Glimmer of Hope for the Fans from an E! Online interview with Sarah Michelle Geller.

"Joss and I always talk about [a movie]," Gellar told me during an interview for E! News. "But the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn't work as a film. And I mean, we had such miles to overcome when we were trying to do a TV show based on a movie. And one of the reasons is that the story works better over time."

And now here comes the tiny sliver: "If there was ever the right story, we would do it."

We'll take it! Right, fans? Even though Gellar also jokes that, "At this point, the stake would be my walker and I would be hobbling in."

Slayer Soundtrack Sunday ~ Nickel on "School Hard"

 photo 1fa953e6-9a52-4f5e-bc4d-fa35f1d3ba9c.jpg

Nickel plays two songs at the Bronze in the Season Two episode "School Hard," which introduces Spike and Drusilla as new villains who come to town to get rid of Buffy, and meet up again with their old pal Angel.

 photo e28717ab55f213ae6dfab3096ece4998.jpg

The title refers to the fact that Spike attacks Sunnydale High on parent-teacher night after a long week for Buffy in which the Principal gives her a hard time. Ironically, the way Buffy saves lives during the ordeal impresses her mother more than any school work could have.
